Vision, and Objectives
Since its foundation, Universidad Austral de Chile has seen research both as an academic activity fundamental for docent development and an answer to the study of problems belonging to its influence area. This activity has been centered in the biological area and on problems connected with environment and renewable natural resources exploitation. As a result, teaching in undergrade and postgrade has been strengthen, thus in Augurt 2004 the National Commision for Undergrade Acreditation granted acreditation to its research activities for a period of five years.
The Corporation has 633 acdemics, appointed to 10 faculties. This human resource is composed by resarchers accredited to take part in research and postgrade programs, fulfilling demands concerning formation and productivity to obtain projects, hence entering into the national and international scientific and technological system.
The highest research potential in academics is inside the macro-areas defined by CONICYT such as: Natural and Exact Sciences, Silvoagropecuarian Sciences and Technology, and Medicine Sciences and Technology.
The Research and Development Direction is the unit coordinating the participation of academics in scientific research through different licitation modalities, and encouraging publication and patents produced as result of projects execution.
Research quality financed through licited funds is protected by assessment mechanisms of their own. The main source comes from FONDECYT, ranging from 600 – 700 million a year. Another important source to obtain external funds is constituted by establishing a considerable number of specific Research agreements with public and private institutions, not only at regional level, but also at national and international level as well.
Presently our chore goes beyond our nation. More and more our researchers are more enfatically participating in international projects; for this purpose, in some areas, the University is closely working with the productive area.
