AUDITING OF FOREST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR IMPLEMENTING AN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The present paper consists in a environmental revision of current management practices carried out by a medium forest company. Its main goal are to identify the negative environmental impact, to make a revision of the forest management practices and, to evaluated its level of compliance whit the current environmental legislation.

Forest management practices from five units located in Region de Los Lagos were studied, accounting a total area of 1600 hectares, including forest plantations and native forest.

The used methodology was descriptive and comparative analysis of the forest management practices in contrast whit a set of best management practices or regulations. The designed method may be a useful tool for any environmental revision focused to small forestry business.

The study concluded that the weakness in that company can be resolved through the implementation of best management practices procedures, including current legislation issues as future goals for both companies. Also training and auditing efforts are needed in order to achieve the procedures.
